Larry Sultan
Sultan spoke about how he felt bad taking these pictures of his family, as he thought he was breaking their privacy. He also mentioned his relationship with his dad, and how he didn't support his choice of becoming a photographer, however after his exhebition, it made him and his dad become closer as they found common interests. Photographs are abstractions, shaped by technology; Cameras
I chose this photograph as the colours and concept is interesting. The way the light is shining creates an illuminating effect on the woman's skin and extenuates the vibrant colours. I especially like the focus on the woman who is wearing a brightly coloured dress which would usually show happiness, but she doesn't look happy to me. She looks quite angry in this photograph and the way that her hands are positioned highlight this even more. I think that that she is the main focus of this image even though we can see the background she is the main focus as the background is blurred and this focus us on her even more. I'm also looking at the shadows, particularly the shadows of the sunbed, which shows the direction of the light. As she is she is looking at the sun maybe she is frowning at the light. She is quite tanned so perhaps this is something that she does a lot. The background suggests an awareness of her at home in her garden so it proves a perfect background so that we know where she is.

At Home
What were you aiming for?
In my photos i was aiming to capture small details around my house that i often pass by without noticing. This has also made me look closer around my house.
Which photographers were you inspired by?
Valérie Six has inspired me as I find it interesting how she uses shadows to create more depth and another layer or meaning to a picture. The use of shadows in her photography makes it all fell more dramatic, which I tried to capture in some of my own photos.
What kinds of photographs do you enjoy taking?
Although I enjoyed taking these pictures around my house, i prefer to take them outside in my garden or parks. I like the beauty of nature and how even a picture can capture how peaceful it can be. I also like the range of colours that can be found in plants and find it interesting how something natural can come in such vibrant colours.
Which one of these is your favourite photographs, and why?
My favourite picture is on the fourth row down, and three across, of the shadow of the ladder on the fireplace. I especially like the lines crossing over each other and the contrast between the white wall and dark shadows. I also like the last picture of the clock as the reflection of the shutters is strong on its glass.
Has this given you ides on a series of photographs that you would like to take? If so what are they? What would you like to focus on?
After taking these pictures I would like to take more of shadows however next time using more interesting shapes and possibly people. I would also edit the pictures to create more contrast and depth.

Delphine Carmona
Delphine Carmona is a photographer based in Berlin, Germany. She takes pictures experimenting with shadows contrast in colours to create unique and interesting effects. Delphine posts all her work on her Instagram account where she has 267K followers. She finds inspiration in light sources, such as candles and sunlight shining through the window. I like Delphine’s work as I think it’s very unique and especially as she focuses on things we see every day, however she has constructed some beautiful photos out of.

Overall I like the outcome of these pictures as I fell they have a more toned down and duller tone just like Arthur's work. I enjoyed taking these pictures particularly as autumnal colours My favourite picture is on the right, as I especially like how you can see the reflection of the trees in the clocks face. The warm tones of the wood and leaves, with the cooler tones such as the walls and clock pair well together, creating a comforting feel.

West Of West
I decided to look at West of West by Sarah Lee and Laura Barton book for my project. I was initially attracted by the colour, and it looked like fun. The images do not looked staged but they look natural. The images are put together as diptychs mainly by colours and I think that each diptych is matched by themes, such as the photograph in the top centre which I think are placed together as they both have similar colour schemes and they have dogs in them. There is a natural line within both images that also complement each other, the photographs also have the same mood, there is something quite laidback about the content,
as it has a cheerful and lighthearted tone. The book explores the 'edge of America' and consists of candid pictures of people around and on the beach. Many of the images are placed together through colour as in the image on the second row in the centre are matched both by the bright colour and the stripes, although they are taken in what I think are at separate times they are so well matched that they could have been taken together. When I view the images some of the images have similar shapes, colour and pattern and line. This has given me some inspiration for my own photographic sequence and how I can place images together. After seeing this book I'd like to edit some of my images by introducing more saturated colours, and having more 'playful' diptychs.
